My wife and I just completed 30 days in the UK in 20 different accommodations! Number 36 ranks head and shoulders above the rest, in areas so achievable by the other 19. Tessa is a friendly and welcoming host; the property is VERY clean and comfortable; concern is shown for any question or advice needed to improve one’s stay. We’ve already recommended Tessa to others and would return in a heartbeat if traveling to Oxford.
A wonderful B&B a real find in a city of hidden treasures Number 36 is one of the stars. This was our third stay and the standard remains as high as our first visit, a genial hostess with a truly welcoming approach to her guests, we would never consider staying anywhere else when visiting Oxford. The city offers a lot of accommodation, but there is only one Number 36!
A great welcome from Tessa the owner, who showed is a very well appointed and comfortable room.
Excellent, tasty breakfast to sustain us during a snowy weekend with a good range of options.
The B&B is very close to local shops in Summertown and just a short bus ride (or walk) to Oxford City centre with all its fascinating sights and places to visit. The house is spotless and with our own bathroom we felt very much at home. We will be back the next time we visit Oxford.
We chose no 36 because it had such good ratings but it still exceeded our expectations. Tessa made us tea with cakes served in the lovely conservatory when we arrived. Both rooms and bathrooms were spotless and beds very comfortable. Breakfast was a delight with a wide choice of cooked food, cereals and fresh fruit. We have stayed in two Oxford hotels previously- one very expensive on the high st – and this B and B was much better than both of them. We will return.
The charming Lilac room offered us perfect comfort, luxury and intimate atmosphere for the special occasion. A super friendly hostess Tessa provided us with great tips for our stay, delicious breakfasts and witty morning chats. The location of B&B is simply perfect. It’s located in a quiet and most prestigious part of Oxford, only 10 min away from the centre by bus or 30 min of a walk through the gorgeous residential area. It’s a perfect bite of English and a must place to stay if you want a perfect Oxford experience.
I had an excellent stay here. I was welcomed warmly by the owner in spite of the fact that I arrived a little on the late side. My room was very comfortable and spotlessly clean. Breakfast was delicious and I greatly enjoyed a bowl of porridge with apple and cinnamon followed by toast with home-made marmalade. The location is excellent – close to bus routes on the Banbury and Woodstock roads, but very peacefully located. I would definitely recommend and hope to return.
Everything about this B&B was excellent. The location is good, on a quiet side street with shopping, restaurants, and bus routes into Oxford center around the corner. My room was very clean, comfortable, and spacious, with a closet, chair, desk, and tv, a remodeled bathroom, and a separate, private location on the lower level. Breakfast was good (Tessa makes delicious homemade jams) and she gave me a variety of options to choose from each morning. Best of all was Tessa as a hostess; she is warm, friendly, accommodating, and enjoyable to talk with. She made me feel welcome from the start; I arrived late in the evening, and she gave me tea and a brownie, and we chatted for a while in the kitchen. If I make it back to Oxford sometime, I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
We passed 3 delightful nights here and can vouch for all the other excellent reviews. The rooms are spotless and cosy (we were in the Mink room, which doesn’t have an ensuite but the bathroom is literally next door and the 2 rooms are on a separate landing so very private). Bed was also extremely comfy (especially important given I was running a half marathon on one of the days!) Tessa was very amenable and a great cook (generous breakfast offerings). Everything went smoothly, from first contacting Tessa to when we left. If you’re visiting Oxford, don’t hesitate to stay here! Thank you Tessa!
We stayed here back in early December for two nights. Tessa is amazing and takes such pride in her beautiful B&B. She kindly and promptly communicated with us via email prior to arrival, reserving the parking space for us as requested. Furthermore, she was very friendly and nothing was ever too much trouble. The room is well furnished, incredibly clean and very comfortable. The bathroom is located just outside of the room, which was no problem at all, helped by the privacy room divider that was provided. Breakfast was superb and cooked to order. Seated in the bright conservatory, we ate breakfast with other guests on our first morning at the large table. This is an excellent option when you are in Oxford and so long as Tessa allows a baby to stay (our new addition), we will definitely be back.
I stayed in Number 36 B&B for three times, 2015, 2016 and 2017.I was so pleased that I never needed to search another place in Oxford. The rooms and baths were clean, comfortable and redecorated. The breakfast was various, fresh and prepared by Tessa. The location of the B&B was also quiet and safe. I was able to reach easily the city center in about 30 minutes by walk.. Tessa’s sincerity and her hospitality made me very happy. I recommend Number 36 to everyone!
Great B&B near Summertown just a short bus ride into Oxford. We had the Cornflour room in the basement which was spacious and comfortable. Tessa was a wonderful hostess and provided a delicious breakfast every morning – traditional English full breakfast or cereals, fruit, toast with homemade jams. There is onsite parking for one car so if driving make sure you let Tessa know so she can reserve the space for you.
Having read the reviews for this B&B for several months before booking, I was intrigued by the consistent positive reviews. Upon arrival at Number 36, Tessa welcomed us with a smile and continued to make us feel welcome and comfortable during our three-day stay. We were extremely happy in the Mink Room as it was quiet and serene with a lovely view of the back gardens. The bed was comfortable and we slept well. The full English breakfast was delicious, and I especially enjoyed the homemade jams! I realized the reason this bed and breakfast is so popular is because Tessa creates a wonderful feeling of warmth, a feeling of being at home.
We recently spent 3 nights at this place. We chose it due to the excellent reviews, and I must say it lived up to our expectations. Our room was very well appointed and exceptionally clean although a little on the small side, and we had a good size on suite bathroom.
Tessa, the host, is very welcoming and hospitable. She makes an excellent breakfast to order.
It is located in Somertown, and we had to commute into town by bus. The buses are frequent and regular so this was not a problem. There is only one parking spot available so make sure you reserve it in advance.
This is great place to stay and you won’t be disappointed!
No. 36 is now our B&B of choice when visiting our daughter in Oxford. Despite our constantly change plan for arrive, Tessa greeted us warmly when we did eventually arrive and offered to make hot drinks.
The Mink room we had this time was a little smaller than the room we had on our previous stay but well furnished and perfectly adequate for our needs. The bathroom is not ensuite but next door to the room and can be screened off from the rest of the landing for more privacy. It is modern and well fitted with an excellent over bath shower.
Once again we had an excellent cooked breakfast, very good bread and excellent home made preserves.
We have every intention of returning soon.
Perfect location . Perfect room . Perfect breakfast . Perfect host . What more can we say only if you go to Oxford be sure to stay here. Convenient for museums, art galleries and all the historic sights of Oxford.
Oxford is one of our ‘must visit’ places whenever we are in the UK. Number 36 B&B is the only place we will stay. Between the “Hi, good to see you again” and the “Bye, see you next time” Tessa does everything to make sure your stay is absolutely perfect. Coming back each day to a comfortable and welcoming room makes a visit to Oxford all the more enjoyable. One of our favorite parts of the day is sitting in the sun room eating a delicious breakfast. The full English breakfast is a real treat. There are plenty of other options to make sure you start out the day right. You can count on Number 36 B&B to make your trip to Oxford extra special.
My mother and I stayed with Tessa for a few nights during our visit from the states, and our time at Number 36 was completely wonderful. Tessa is warm, funny, and friendly. Breakfasts were absolutely delicious. The bedroom and bathroom were extremely clean, and the heated towels were an especially nice touch. My mother and I stayed in the Mink room and, though small, was comfortable, cozy, and entirely suited our needs. Months later, we still talk about our stay here, and can’t wait to make plans to come back!
This is a lovely, comfortable, friendly, convenient place to stay. Altogether a treat. We have been twice and would certainly recommend it to a friend. There are excellent transport links to central Oxford and nearby shops and restaurants.
If you are looking for the perfect place to stay in Oxford, you have just found it! Tessa welcomed us with a smile, a cup of tea and an home-made cake. The house is beautiful and our room was spacious and spotless. The breakfast was delicious. The location is very convenient if you want to visit the city center: number 36 is within a two minutes walk from the bus station (less than 10 minutes to go in town). Thanks again for having us Tessa !

We spent two nights at this lovely b&b whilst revisiting old haunts from our Oxford student days. Tessa was very welcoming and we enjoyed tea and brownies in the garden on arrival. The room was scrupulously clean and fitted out to a very high standard, with a perfect little bathroom. Being a basement room there no view from the window but this didn’t matter at all as we were only in the room in the late evening, and for breakfast we could sit in the lovely conservatory overlooking the garden. Tessa was very friendly and made us feel right at home. The location is great – just a short bus ride from the centre of town or about 20 minutes walk. Will return when next in Oxford.
Superb,3 nights break in ideal location for a stay in Oxford near to local restaurants and Oxford centre only 10 min away. Excellent choice once again, thanks to Trip Adviser reviews. You won’t be disappointed .Our stay in the Lilac room with en-suite was fantastic.Tessa was a very friendly host and cooked us a fresh 5 star breakfast every day. Her home was vey clean and comfortable with a feel of luxury to our room .We will come again on our next visit to Oxford. Bruce & Karen.
My friend and I stayed at No 36 for 3 nights and found it to be excellent base FTon which to explore Oxford. Our room was spotlessly clean, and the entire suite bathroom was a delight. Tessa was always on hand to offer advice and, every morning, cooked the most delicious breakfasts. HIGHLY recommended!
Beautiful BnB!!!!!!! We arrived early which wasn’t a bother for Tessa. Our room and bathroom was perfect. Very close to the centre of Oxford and easy to get around by public transport. Tessa was very accommodating and caring as I had hurt my heel whilst walking the Thames. Tessa suggested an amazing Indian for dinner. All in all our time spent in Oxford was made easy by staying at Tessa’s. Thank you if we ever return we would certainly stay here again!!!!!
Comfortable, very clean and a wonderful hostess, other establishments could learn a lot from Number 36. Well situated and quiet it makes an ideal base for the city and surrounds. An outstanding breakfast and very warm welcome, fuss free, perfect. Thank you.
Stayed at 36 B&B for a night on a visit to Oxford. The house is beautiful and in a great location in a quiet road just north of the town centre. The bus is a 3 minute walk away and takes you straight into the centre in about 10 minutes.
We stayed in the mink room which has a private bathroom (not ensuite) which was perfect. Absolutely immaculate with a great view of the cottage garden.
Breakfast was superb and the host is lovely.
Will definitely be back.

We were a group of four traveling to Oxford and luckily we found this place. It was simply perfect. We occupied both upstairs rooms which are wonderfully decorated, the bathrooms are well equipped and the view either on the street or over the garden is beautiful. Everything was super clean. The beds are extremely comfy and the linen so soft; we slept very well. After a warm welcome and showing us our rooms Tessa made us coffee and had even baked a cake for us which was delicious. Breakfast also was a delight. We enjoyed sitting in the breakfast room a lot. It’s an easy walk into town. We had a wonderful time thanks to a our great host and hope to return one day!

I cannot speak highly enough of how Tessa runs Number 36 bed and breakfast. From the moment we arrived we were so well looked after . The location is in a beautiful part of Oxford and easy to get to the city centre on the bus….5 min walk to the bus stop! The decor and bedrooms are very tasteful and the breakfast is as good as I’ve had anywhere. I’ve already told Tessa that I’ll be booking my mum into Number 36 for a weekend visit this summer. 10 out of 10 in every way.
As visitors from the US we enjoyed the perfect English B&B. Lovely neighborhood setting with easy access to buses into town on either end of the block as well as shops, a Sunday AM farmer’s market, and a lovely pub with vast outdoor seating from which to watch the world go by. We opted for the copious and delicious English breakfast with hearty whole wheat toast and jams all 3 mornings but there were many other options – granola, yogurt, fresh fruit, boiled eggs., etc. served in the spacious conservatory overlooking a lovely garden where we lingered over tea and cake upon arrival. Our beautiful room with private bath was immaculate. Bed linens sumptuous! Book early. There are only 3 bedrooms and 2 were already booked 2 months before our arrival. Tessa is friendly and helpful – obviously enjoys her guests.

2nd visit – different room and just as good. Boutique hotel standards with great decor, comfortable big beds, smart bathrooms and fantastic quality breakfast and wonderful host – would highly recommend.
We were in Oxford for the Oxford Folk Weekend and were delighted with this lovely B and B which made our long weekend all the more enjoyable and relaxing. The Mink room was cosy with a comfy bed and a large modern bathroom just next door. The breakfast was delicious, especially liked the porridge with cinnamon and apple. We tried almost everything on the menu and it was all great quality. The location is just a short bus journey from the centre of the town and the buses are frequent. Also amazing cakes for arrival! Would highly recommend the B and B and the Oxford Folk weekend!
We found B&B 36 in Oxford to be the perfect base in a quiet neighborhood to visit the city and explore the many surrounding areas in the Cotswold. It is within walking distance of restaurants, shops, bus service, and grocery stores. There was parking on the property for one car, but there was also parking close by.
A beautifully maintained home, with lovely rooms, that gets full marks for cleanliness, and charm. We stayed in the upstairs bedroom that faced the front street. It had a beautiful bathroom, big shower with plenty of hot water, heated floors and towel rack.
An English breakfast (eggs, sautéed mushrooms, sautéed tomatoes, brown beans, bacon, sausages) was served each morning in the glass atrium and was a hearty way to start the day. Or you could choose the delicious, hot porridge with apples sautéed in a brown sugar cinnamon sauce over top. All breakfasts included, yogurt, juice, coffee/tea, fresh cut fruit, toast, cereals and home made jams that we especially enjoyed.
We would arrive back from our day’s adventure to a homemade snack of dessert squares,/brownies on the kitchen counter. There was coffee, teabags and a hot water kettle that was available 24/7 for us to use. This was a nice touch!
Tessa was a wonderful hostess and owner. She was genuinely warm, with a great friendly personality. She made us feel like we were staying at a friend’s home
Our 5 nights at B&B 36 were memorable. Our stay was excellent and it was a place that we would want to come back to again!

Just looking for a one night stay in the North of Oxford we chanced upon No. 36 and couldn’t have made a better choice. As others have said, the welcome was warm, the home cooking excellent, and the room (in the basement) very comfortable. Parking no problem on the local streets, and a frequent bus service into town. I’m sure we’ll be back!
Number 36 has everything you could wish for, from modern, stylish, spotlessly clean accommodation to the delicious breakfasts and many thoughtful extras. In a quiet location with easy access into and out of the city, regular buses, good restaurants and local shops just a few minutes walk away, it is very well positioned. Tessa is a perfect host, putting her guests needs at the centre of her business and making their stay a very happy experience. A most delightful home from home and one to which we will very happily return.
It was our first time in Oxford and we wanted something more cosy than an hotel.. Tessa is sweet and we can say that she cares about hers guests. We arrived completely wet and she offered a nice cup of tea with homemade cookies to warm us up. The room was AWESOME, so comfortable. nice morning as well, very good breakfast (homemade jams) with a lot of options!
I had a lovely stay in Tessa’s B&B in the pleasant Summertown area of the city. My room (Mink) had a really comfortable bed, and a great private bathroom. Breakfast was plentiful and delicious, particularly Tessa’s own homemade marmalade! Tessa is so friendly and gave me some good tips for dinner – Joe’s Bar and Grill just five minutes walk away was very nice. I will definitely be re-booking if I’m in Oxford again.

We had a wonderful stay at Number 36 B&B! The room was so cosy and had a very comfy bed, with a nice view of the garden. Tessa is lovely, a perfect host and a brilliant cook! Thank you, Tessa! Highly recommended! Sophia and Ed
Last minute booking no trouble to our welcoming hostess, parking off the road and frequent buses into the centre of Oxford nearby, fascinating company at breakfast, delicious food , altogether a memorable stay.
A warm welcome, clean, friendly, warm and comfortable. Beautiful linens with extras in showers/bathrooms. Great choices for breakfasts with the best boiled eggs of anywhere I have stayed.
A short walk into Oxford but plenty of buses pass the road end should you not fancy the walk.
All in all a lovely home from home choice, excellent value for money and wouldn’t have any hesitation in recommending No 36 at all.

We stayed in the beautiful Lilac room, with a very comfortable bed and luxurious shower room. The house is in a quiet street within easy reach of central Oxford. Tessa was very welcoming and cooked us a delicious breakfast, complete with gluten free toast for me. We’ll be back!
Really lovely cosy place; very homely; and Tessa is a great hostess.
Only a 20-30 min walk into town and buses galore if you don’t fancy that.
Food was good with a decent range of options for breakfast.
Would visit again without hesitation.

I don’t think anyone would regret booking a stay in this lovely b’n’b. It’s spotlessly clean and yet still feels like home.
Breakfast was delicious and made perfectly with high quality ingredients – there was even with homemade jam for your toast. Tessa also made us feel so welcome on our arrival with tea and homemade Rocky Roads : )
The room itself was comfy, cosy, and clean. Like the rest of the house it was also really beautifully decorated.
Thank you for a lovely stay Tessa (and for the directions into town and Blemheim Palace!)

What a wonderful spot! Great place to stay, just a short distance from Oxford town centre. Hostess greeted us with coffee/tea/cake in a beautiful garden conservatory. Recommended & phoned us a cab for quick ride into town for sightseeing. Room was clean, spacious, & comfortable with terrific shower en-suite.
We spend two wonderful nights in Tessa’s Lilac Room. Upon arrival we enjoyed a cup of tea, some homemade cakes and had a great chat with Tessa who made us feel very welcome.
The room was very comfortable and clean with a lovely en-suite which had a truly fantastic shower. The underfloor heating was a delight for morning feet!
Our cooked breakfast was delicious and Tessa’s local knowledge made our time in Oxford very enjoyable.
When we return to Oxford we will be staying with Tessa.
My experiences of B and B’s are limited, but if they could guarantee to be as delightful and luxurious as No 36, I would never bother staying at a hotel again! We had the privilege of stopping in the Lilac Bedroom and it was wonderful. The room was beautifully decorated, the bed extremely comfortable, the bathroom luxuriously appointed (and spotlessly clean) and the whole experience could not have been bettered. Tessa was so welcoming – tea and brownie on arrival! – nothing was too much trouble. The full English breakfast the next morning was delicious; there was also a comprehensive range of cereals, fruits, juice etc. (I can highly recommend the homemade blackcurrant jam!) My sisters were also staying and we had the most lovely time, sitting at Tessa’s dining room table chatting away, whilst she produced a wonderful breakfast.
If you need a B and B in Oxford, look no further. The only potential fly in the ointment is the limited parking, but this can be sorted and it should not put you off!
Outstanding B&B. The owner is very warm and welcoming ensuring your stay is trouble free and enjoyable. excellent selection of breakfast options which we ate in a pleasant and relaxing environment. the rooms are tastefully decorated with extremely comfortable beds. l was so relaxed in the setting that it was almost like coming home. Highly recomended
I stayed at Number 36 with my partner for one night in July and we had a great stay! Tessa is a lovely host who greeted us with delicious home made banana bread and made us a tasty full English in the morning. The bed was extremely comfy and the room was immaculate. Couldn’t recommend more highly!
Round the corner from the summertown shops, good bus links into town, very comfortable and friendly with delicious breakfasts.
We had an excellent time with Tessa and she was truly a wonderful hostess! The house is beautiful, clean, and modern and Tessa was great in giving us our privacy but also being a personable and helpful host. Tessa put a lot of attention in all the details– the room, the breakfast, bathroom. Highly recommend staying here.
Definitely the best place to be in Oxford. The perfect room. Couldn’t be more clean. The best breakfast, and of course a wonderful hostess. Evidently we will return. Thanks Tessa!
A warm welcome and the offer of a cup of tea was waiting for us on our arrival. Tessa had already proved most helpful with restaurant recommendations, parking arrangements etc… and even helped carry our bags!
The room we had booked was spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated, and was self-contained with it’s own en-suite.
Hot drinks were available whenever we wanted, and the breakfast was simply delicious – it set us up for the day.
A lovely place to stay where you will be made to feel very welcome and so much better than an impersonal hotel.
